Though the population decreased in 1911 which is due to plague and other epidemics, the population is steadily increasing between 1911 to 1981. The population of Chikmagalur town itself constitutes 34.3% of the urban population of the District.

 

The Urban population which was 41639 in 1971 has risen to 60582 in 1981 i.e. the growth rate during the decade is 45.49% compared to that of 1961-71, which was 37.63%.According to table...1, the level of urbanization of chikmagalur district has declined during the decade of 1981-1991.the proportion of urban population has moved down from 17.54 percent in 1981 to 16.89 percent in 1991. Though the extent of the decrease is marginal, the negative trend is quite clear. This phenomenon of a fall in the proportion of urban population is noticeable in six out of seven taluks.

 

Comparing the growth of the town with Hassan which is the nearest class II Town.Chikmagalur has recorded comparatively operative higher growth during -1971-81 which is 45.497. Compared to that of Hassan which is 39.37 through except during the decade 1951-61 that of Hassan town is more, during the other decades except as mentioned during 1951-61. The growth of Chikmagalur town is more.
